Have you heard of 'Children laugh 300 to 400 times a day, and adults only 17.5' ?
While this may be just another urban myth, it is no news that children indeed laugh much more often than adults do.
That's kind of sad.
But who would choose not to laugh?
I love laughing and being happy, and being happy makes me happier.
On the other hand, it's sad to be angry and sad, and that fact makes me more angry and sad.
Am I still making sense?
But who enjoys being unhappy anyway?
Throughout the journey of adulting, we may be overwhelmed by stress, fatigue, responsibilities, peer pressure, grieve, conflicts, fear, guilt, anxiety, frustration or just the fact that the world isn't a perfect place.
These not-so-nice things eventually wipe off the smile off our faces every now and then.
And if you are not careful, you may grow into a grumpy complain king/ queen bitching about life, society and the world.
And you will spend way much more money too.
Unhappy people tend to make impulse purchases and illogical money decision.
Retail therapy, binge eating, taking unnecessary cab rides, gambling, smoking, keeping up with the Jones, spending beyond means, paying for sex, comfort and companionship, involving in various addiction, and the list goes on.
It's unhealthy to be unhappy too.
Aside from slipping into depression, there's also a higher risk of weakening the immune system and developing other illnesses.
Not to mention, medical treatment, both mental and physical, cost money as well.
Just by being happy, you'd be healthier, and richer, and that will make you happier.
Happiness is a luxury. And nobody wants to be unhappy.
You may not be able to choose what happened to you, or what happened around you, but you can choose what to focus on and how to react to the situation.
However, if the situation is too heart breaking that you can't be happy about it, that's fine. You don't have to force yourself to be happy, because forcing yourself to be happy won't make you really happy. But you can still choose what you want to do about it.
The year has hit really hard for many people worldwide.
I have been following the news since last December on the you-know-what virus as I have some friends in China, of which a few are in Wuhan, where the reality is much more depressing than how the mainstream media has portrayed thus far.
Over the past few weeks, Singapore has also been competing fiercely with Thailand and Japan to be the ranked as the country which have most number of confirmed cases outside of China.
There are many things that are beyond our circle of control, but there are still things that we can do about it, i.e. basic things such as maintaining good personal hygiene and minimising exposure to risk (wear a mask!).
Let's do the best we can, make the best of ourselves and the opportunities presented to us.
Let's take good care of ourselves, be happy, stay healthy and get rich.
And let's be the ones who get to laugh till the very end.
